. >> the real threat at the moment is here with us. >> what happened if nothing happens with mark zandi, jackie calmes. >> politically, the speaker is playing with a weaker hand than the president. the pressure is higher on him, and his critics are louder, too. >> just need boehner to go along with raising the rates and that's it. republican party is finished. >> he is selling out our children right now with these massive tax increases, and that's his starting bid. he is saying here is $800 billion, now will you sit down with, us a obama? >> hashtags with names like fire boehner have become popular. still, where the votes get counting, boehner seems to have more room to maneuver than he did in preelection faceoffs. but it begs the question, even if the republican speaker gets a deal, can he get it passed? joining me now is tom cole of oklahoma, martha blackburn of tennessee, thank you both for joining us, and i think that's really the key question that we keep hearing. they'll get a deal -- they'll get something. but it doesn't matter if the two of them get a deal, it matters if the speaker has

updating us. soledad, very interesting development. apparently all these false social media reports allegedly supposedly from this killer out there and the warning from this police chief, the warning is specific, warning being if you get engaged and circulate these false reports with threats out there, you are violating the law and they will go after you? >> yeah. he was tough on that. one of the things he said, while not specifically referencing any specific social media reports, he said that there is erroneous information coming out, all their information is on their official website and not to trust anything that was just being repeated or created on social media. highlighting, of course, that there had been contradictory information, just wrong information. very tough on that as you heard in that press conference, wolf? >> yeah. because some of these social media sites i've seen one or two of them over the past day or so, and they're making these accusations and these threats out there and scare something folks and these are totally obviously erroneous. the authorities are going
comprehensive, very carefully designed mix of savings and tax reforms to help us put us back on the path to stabilizing our debt and fixing our debt and living within our means. we've been very detailed about how to do that, both on the spending side and revenue side, and we think this is a good plan for the country, and it does the most important thing, which is it gives 98% of americans the certainty your taxes aren't going to go up, and it gives us a chance to make sure we're protecting medicare for future generations and gives us the ability to lock in a set of carefully designed reforms that put us back on the path to fiscal balance. it's its a very good plan, and we think it's a good basis for these conversations. >> it's a starting point because when you look at it, the president said in september i am still willing to deal with republicans and, you know, $2.50 worth of cuts for every dollar's worth of revenue raising. this is nowhere near that. >> that's not what people -- what we are proposing is consistent with that. we have roughly $2 of spending cuts if you include what's alr
and they know which one he used to kill himself and did not reveal that. back to today's activitieses they have a lot of territory to cover. i'm told there are at least 400 gun dealers in this four-county area as well as 30 gun ranges and they plan to make contact with each and every one of them and there are only 30 agents working at trying to accomplish that very difficult task. so candy, they have a lot of work to do to get down to the bottom of what started this, where those guns came from, how he got his hands on them, whether he trained on those weapons. those are the kinds of questions they're asking. wire tryi we're trying to find out if he left beginning behind written down. so far i've heard nothing about that. back to you, candy. >> thanks. following the investigation of this horrific crime for us at cnn, i spoke a short while ago with connecticut's governor about the investigation. governor, thank you for joining us here. let me just first ask you about the state of the investigation. what do we now know and where are we in the investigation? >> first and foremost, that's the state
liberal left wing agenda. that used to be considered a republican mainstream agenda. >> joining me senator olympia sn snowe of maine. let me start with that. it does seem sort of counter intuitive to have republicans wanting to fight for tax hikes for no one and in that fight, being willing to allow tax hikes for everyone? >> you know, i would agree with that. obviously it is important to make sure that middle income america does not confront a tax increase at the beginning of next year, which is less than two days away. that is critical. the second part is, of course, is trying to address the spending cuts that are going to be crucial next year as well. more for the long-term debt reduction that i think republicans are talking about, but the bottom line is, we should pass this tax extension for middle income america before we adjourn this year. >> and what is -- what do you -- where do you think this will land? as we understand it now, there is still a difference of opinion, about where that tax rate should end. is it 250,000 as the president said and everyone below that sees no hike in t
the dangers and backlash is the program director assa hutchinson. thank you for joining us. one of the thing that struck me is there was no mention of any gun control in favor or in opposition, so i wanted to get you on the record. will the nra oppose any attempt to put new gun laws in place? >> well, that's a separate debate. my responsibility is school safety, and i think that's where the debate should center. we've got to act in a very urgent fashion to protect the children. my responsibility is to convene a high-level panel of experts to develop a model program for schools and new tools to use to protect our children. one of those options should be armed guards who are trained, but that should be an option for the schools. one of the tools that they can utilize, but that's the debate. it shouldn't be on new legislation as much as it should be on what to do to protect our children in school safety. that's my focus. >> debate, as you know, has a way of shaping itself, and you are working for the nra. so i'm trying to find out if there's anything in terms of gun contr control. we know what'
in the world we spent on the election. talk about wasting money. we can use this in the country for better things. i think it's shocking. >> i understand porn is part of something of the year as well that you want to talk about, porn? >> we learned something. women like to read porn. imt not sure about watching but read it thanks to 50 shades of gray. it sold off the book shelves and coined the term mommy porn as most women married with children read this with a little release to have fun. it will turn into a movie soon. men are more traditional and would rather see it than read about it. >> don't forget to check out his op-ed on cnn.com/opinion. thanks for watching today. "state of the union" with candy crowley starts now. >>> few big things get done in washington without drama, and we're although the precipice of a very bing thing. today the cliff-hanger. >> we're now at the last minute. >> wlaefr we come up with is imperfect. >> we'll work hard to get there. >> getting a deal and getting it passed with democratic senator debbie stab gnaw and john ba wrasse a and darrell issa and donna e
